tREE tRIMMING iNFORMATION
Types of Tree Trimming
1. Dead Pruning--This is trimming the branches that are dead, diseased, or dying. It helps by improving the overall appearance of the tree. Some homeowners can be conflicted about dead pruning. Removing the dead branches at an early stage greatly reduces the risk of injury or eventual damage to the property. Dead pruning can also prevent sick or diseased branches from spreading and will improve the appearance of the tree. This makes the tree less dangerous and makes the tree look cleaner. 2. Crown Thinning Also known as crown thinning, this type of trimming removes weak branches and opens the canopy. Air and light penetration into the tree is enhanced with crown thinning. By removing defective branches, the load of larger branches is significantly lightened. Make sure to remove unwanted branches and edges throughout the crown. Also avoid removing too many branches from the center, as this could affect the overall structure. 3. Crown Lifting This is cutting off lower branches of the tree to lessen the weight of the larger limbs. Often this is done in order to clear sidewalks, driveways, roads, and is done sometimes because branches may be interfering with your house or garage. Crown lifting is recommended for younger plants, because when done to fully grown trees, it can leave bigger wounds on the tree. 4. Crown Reduction This process lessens the overall height of a tree. This is typically recommended for only younger trees, and not mature trees. The focus of this type of trimming is to remove terminal branches and preserve the main limb. This should only be done by someone who understands the tree growth pattern. When done the correct way, this allows the tree to continue growing and minimizes the risk of any decay after pruning. 5. Pollarding This technique involves removing all branches and remaining with a framework of the secondary branches of the main stem. This begins when the tree is still young and is only done at regular intervals during the tree's overall lifespan. Pollarding is done to provide a constant supply of small diameter poles. |
Benefits of Tree Trimming
1. Improves Tree Health A large tree doesn’t have the capability of absorbing all the essential nutrients from the soil or the ground. The lack of nutrients will impact the health of the tree. By by cutting off some of larger branches the nutrients can be maximized by everyone. 2. Increased Sunlight Exposure The amount of photosynthesis that occurs is determined by the amount of sun, reaching the leaves other than the number of leaves the tree has. If higher branches are leaving many leaves hidden from the sun, then the process is diminished. By trimming or removing unnecessary branches, the tree is able to get more sunlight, thus increasing photosynthesis. 3. Counterbalance Root Loss Root loss can be minimized when regular tree trimming is conducted on a tree. It can also help shape the tree 4. Detect Diseases Early Many diseases can be discovered early by tree trimming. Early detection can prevent the disease from spreading. 5. Increased Productivity By minimizing the number of branches a tree has, it increases the amount of nutrients the tree gets from the soil. 6. Minimize Damage When trees are close to a house, garage, shed, or out-building, they need to be pruned regularly in order to get rid of any potential branches that could fall and damage the property. 7. Add Property Value When trees remain untrimmed, with dead branches, split or otherwise decaying, it makes property look unkempt. By taking care of trees, making sure they are trimmed and healthy, the value of the property will increase almost immediately. Plus the property will just have an overall better look. 8. Cost Effective If dead branches fall from untrimmed trees, they can cause damages to property. Keeping the trees trimmed minimizes these risks and, hence, cut any possible cost spent on repair. |
